Today we would like to speak about the Italian Colours considering them like Adjectives. Actually they are – in grammar – adjectives. Analysing  their terminations  we will have analised ate the same time the Italian Adjectives Terminations.

So let’s speak about the Italian Adjectives Terminations through the Italian Colours.

In Italian there are two groups of adjectives and each group has its specific terminations. There are adjectives (and colors) that are under the first Group, and adjectives (and colors) that are under the second.

1st GROUP OF ITALIAN ADJECTIVES

To this Group belong the colours like BIANCO – GIALLO – ROSSO – AZZURRO – GRIGIO – NERO. These adjectives change their terminations according to the gender (feminine or masculine) and the number (singular or plural) of the noun they accompany.

These are their specific endings:

O , when the adjective accompanies a masculine singular noun. (Example: Un tavolo bianc-o).

A , when the adjective accompanies a feminine singular noun. (Example: Una casa bianc-a)

I , when the adjective accompanies a masculine plural noun. (Example: I tavoli bianch-i)

E , when the adjective accompanies a feminine plural noun. (Example: Le case bianch-e)

2nd GROUP OF ITALIAN ADJECTIVES

To this Group belong the colours like VERDE – ARANCIONE – MARRONE – CELESTE. These adjectives change their terminations ONLY according to the number of the noun they accompany.

These are their specific endings:

E , when the adjective accompanies a MASCULINE or a FEMININE singular noun. (Example: Un tavolo verd-e / Una casa verd-e).

I , when the adjective accompanies a MASCULINE or a FEMININE plural noun. (Example: I tavoli verd-e / Le case verd-i)

Adjectives of Nationality

Not only the colours are adjectives in Italian but also the words that we use for expressing the nationality. So we have adjectives of nationality that belong to the first class and Adjectives of nationality that belong to the second. Here some examples:

Adjectives of Nationality – First Class

Italiano | a
Italiani | e
Americano | a
Americani | e
Tedesco | a
Tedeschi | e
Spagnolo | a
Spagnoli | e
Russo | a
Russi | e

Adjectives of Natonality – Second Class

Cinese – iFrancese – i
Inglese – i
Portoghese – i
