Jumpa Lahiri How to learn Italian Language

Jumpa Lahiri is an American woman writer that grew up in an Indian family. She really loves Italy and the Italian Language, and for the first time, on 2016, she wrote a book in Italian. This book, In Other Words, tells the story of the long and exciting process that led her to learn Italian language.

She has been living in Rome for three years (since 2102) and during that time, she collaborated with the Magazine Internazionale. She wrote many short stories for that Magazine (which is a really good Italian Magazine) and after that, the stories were published on the book In Other Words.

The English book is available but she did not work personally on the English version of the book. She said she did not want to beautify her Italian writing in English.

The original title in Italian is “In altre parole” and its publisher is Guanda. This book tells you not only how to learn Italian language, but also how to do it when you are an adult person.

La Voce di New York published a very good article in Italian about her book. Also, La Voce linked to a video about the Conference that she held at the Monclair State University for discussing the book. This conference was held for the Inserra Chiar in Italian and American Italian Studies.

Furthermore you have an interesting Gardian article and a video interview here below.

The death of Umberto Eco

Umberto Eco was a giant among the contemporary Italian writers. Alessandro Baricco, remembering him last Sunday begins his article on Repubblica (the Italian newspaper) saying: “I’m simplifying: it was the greatest.” (“Semplifico: era il più grande”).
Let’s now focus on two important facts to remember him:

  • Jumpa Lahiri How to learn Italian LanguageIl Nome della Rosa ( The Name of The Rose), the first novel Umberto Eco wrote (1980). Best seller around the world from which comes the movie (same name of the book, see here for the trailer) with a great Sean Connery in the leading role (1986). Eco did the drawings you see below during the writing of the book in order to “see” better the characters he was describing.
  • The theme of memory. Endless, beautiful theme, on which Umberto Eco was particularly focused. In this regard he recently wrote a beautiful letter to his nephew (“Caro nipotino mio, …“) and also gave an interview to Davide Ferrario about this topic. You can see the interview here, it is divied in three parts.
